SHIFT+Drag in Split surfaces window crashes KS`

New workstation, fresh install of KS, and when I enter the “Split Surfaces” Tool and i shift+click and drag to select multiple surfaces, keyshot crashes and disappears without warning or notice.

Happens on any project, doesn’t matter what geometry i use, new or old project, GPU or CPU.

First time this has occurred for me, its a pretty critical part of my workflow to split surfaces.

I can CTRL+ click to select mulitple surfaces, that works fine, but can’t click and drag to select surfaces.

Any ideas! Iv’e been sending loads of crash reports in as I’m testing.

Works as intended in latest version and in latest beta. Tested with Windows 11 and an old graphic driver (551.52 DCH) for my RTX A5000 mobile.
BTW, the tool windows like split, geometry view, etc. doesn’t depend to CPU or GPU mode, These uses OpenGL shader (IMO), like most typical CAD tools.
I had a similar problem with an older KeyShot version (years ago), when the graphic driver had the wrong opengl version. Driver update ► problem gone.

You can also look, if the new installation uses a new kssettings.xml and not a copied one from the previous system.

Hope thats helps to solve the issue.

Does work here as well, tested in 2024.3 and 2025.1. Could easily be a driver problem as Marco points out. I’m currently on the latest driver from May 19. But this driver is not really a recommended driver.

To prevent issues, you should actually install a driver older than 565.90. Must say I don’t have issues with current driver, sometimes in 2025.x it starts rendering terribly slow but reloading the scene and/or starting the render again seems to wake it up. I can’t imagine this is a driver issue but more a 2025.x issue although I think I reported it for 2024.3 as well, not sure anymore.

Thanks for the ideas-

  • fresh settings file did not resolve.
  • Can’t use driver versions lower than 570.xx, no support for the 5090 cards

This is a new install of windows, and a new install of Keyshot. I did bring over a lot of the resources folder, but that shouldn’t be a problem. Going to submit an actual ticket with support to see what they can get going on it.

Ah yeah forgot you had the 5090. Not sure if you use the game or studio drivers? You could swap and see if it helps. Don’t think there’s much different though.

A friend of mine also has a 5090 and there were really a lot of issues which just concerned the 5090 cards in basically every driver since the cards are released.

If you install other drivers I always select manual and clean install, trust that more than just install it.

Another thing that comes in mind, think your new CPU has an integrated graphics card. If it’s active you can see if it helps to disable it in bios so windows can’t be confused on what gpu it should use with the opengl viewport for the surfaces.

yeah it does have integrated graphics I can try to dsable it and see what happens. I’m all about troubleshooting what I can while I’m waiting for support to respond to my ticket.

I noticed Nvidia also released a hotfix for the driver which is a long shot but you could try if it makes a difference: Announcing GeForce Hotfix Driver 576 | NVIDIA GeForce Forums

I took also a dive in the developers forums of Nvidia and there are quite a lot OpenGL issues mentioned. A solution for some seems to be to disable Threaded optimization in the Nvidia control panel:

Not any help but I’ve the feeling this has not much to do with KS. I always keep an eye on release notes of drivers and there are so many issues with the Nvidia drivers which only apply to the 50xx series cards the past months, it’s just really strange. In the dev forum of Nvidia also developers report issues their OpenGL based software suddenly isn’t working anymore.
